BIG DAY am Ätna – beste Session seit 10 Jahren

Es war der 28.1.10 und ich alias “Flachländer” und weiter Anbeter von Kites, Wind und Schnee befanden sich beim gemütlichen Frühstück im Ätna Hotel auf 1980m. Alle waren ein wenig bedrückt, denn der vorhergesagte Wind mit 25 Knoten aus West, war nicht zu sehen. Ein paar Kaffee später fingen dann doch die Fahnen an sich zu bewegen und es kam Nervosität auf. Der Flachi blieb cool wie immer und bereite seine Sachen vor wie ein Uhrwerk. Der Rucksack wurde mit RedBull und Snacks, sowie Kites gestopft und es ging raus, währen die überforderten Totalflachländer noch die Hosen mit Jacken und umgekehrt verwechselten und vor lauter Mamamia nicht zu Potte kamen. 300m hinterm Hotel gab es Platz für den Kiteaufbauen zwischen den Felsen. 12er Manta raus und los. Der Wind blies vom Vulkan herunter und machte das Aufkreuzen gegen den Berg nicht gerade einfach. Besonders die ersten 300 Höhenmeter waren sehr tricky aber der Wind nahm stetig zu und irgendwann musste ich den Kite nur noch stellen und mich Schuss den Berg hochziehen lassen bis ich ca. 30min später an der oberen Skistation ankam. Der Wind hatte auf locker 20 – 25 Knoten aufgefrischt. Der 1m frische Powder gab genug halt um den 12er noch zu halten und ritze mir ein fettes Grinsen ins Gesicht. Noch nicht einmal der Skilift lief, aber wer braucht den schon, bei solchen Bedingungen?
Von der Skistation aus ging es dann Richtung Norden gegen den Wind weiter. Ich sah nach unten und konnte Chasta ausfindig machen, der gerade am Hotel loslegte. Ich musste aber weiter, denn der Gipfel rief und rauchte schon vor Wut, dass ich auf mich warten ließ. Also nichts wie hin, damit sich dieser wieder beruhigt, denn wer will schon, dass das scheiß Ding richtig wütend wird, denn dann wird’s heiß!

Knapp 1h nach dem Start stand ich oben und beruhigte den fauchenden Berg. 1300 Höhenmeter in weniger als einer Stunde uggggaaaaa! Also Kite in den Rucksack und wieder runter. Es stand einiges auf dem Programm an diesem Tag! Ich wollte sehen wie viel Höhenmeter man an so einem Big Day machen kann. 10.000m fand ich ja illusorisch aber einen Versuch wert. Auf dem Weg nach unten kam mir Chasta entgegen und ich sah Pascal und Stefano in der Höhe von der Skistation mit den 6er Access am klettern. Die würden wohl noch eine Weile brauchen mit den kleinen Dingern! Chasta und ich ballerten wieder zum Gipfel und tobten dort für ein paar Minuten bis die anderen schlussendlich kamen. Es wurde gefilmt und Photos geschossen und gespielt bis zum Siedepunkt.
Ich habe nicht gezählt wie oft ich den Kite Ab- und wieder Aufgebaut habe, aber es war bestimmt nicht weniger als 15mal! Gegen Nachmittag legte der Wind noch einen Tick zu und so konnte ich den 12er beruhigt im Sack lassen und den 8er auspacken. Selbst damit ging es noch Schuss bergauf, die Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit von 21km/h kommt ja nicht von ungefähr! Hört sich vielleicht nicht viel an, aber macht das mal über einen 9 Std Tag verteilt!
Zum späten Nachmittag hin ließen wir uns dann auf das „Plateau“ knapp über dem Skilift „herab“, wo die anderen Totalflachländer am cruisen waren. Ich hatte schon höchsten Respekt vor ihnen, dass sie es alle bis dort hoch geschafft hatten, immerhin 600 Höhenmeter, vom Hotel, wunderte mich dann aber doch, warum sie dann nicht auch das einfachere Stück bis zum Gipfel wagten… Der Lift lief immer noch nicht, also der konnte es nicht gewesen sein. Am Abend erfuhr ich dann erst, dass sie mit dem Radtrack der „Carabinieri“ in die Höhe chauffiert wurden – hier ist der Beweis, es sind alle bestechlich
Der Wind nahm immer noch stetig zu und erreichte am Abend bis an die 35 Knoten. Und das von unten Baumgrenze bis oben… ok vielleicht waren es schon 10 Knoten unterschied aber für die Höhendifferenz kaum Nennenswert. Als die Sonne sank und sich die Müdigkeit bei allen breit machte, war für den Flachländer noch lange nicht Schluss. Klar, es gab noch Licht, Wind und ein weiteres RedBull – und weiter geht’s…
Die ganze Italien Mafia fuhr ab ins Hotel, Chasta und Pascal hatte ich verloren und so fuhr ich noch einmal bis ganz runter ab um dann noch einmal auf den Gipfel zu schießen um diesen dann bei Sonnenuntergang abzufahren. Die Kulisse war der Oberporno für jeden Snowkiter! Der rauchende Vulkan direkt neben dir, 1500m tiefer eine geschlossene Wolkendecke in welcher die Sonne versankt. Wer’s jetzt nicht checkt, der checkt‘s nie! Checkst?!
Auf dem Weg nach unten sah ich auf einmal Chasta im Hang sitzen, der sich das beschriebene Szenario in aller Ruhe ansah. Ungläubig, Todmüde aber glücklich wie noch nie zogen wir uns das letzte Kapitel des heutigen Pornos voller Stolz rein. Auf dem weiteren Weg zum Hotel runter, holten wir noch „Telemark“ – Pascal ein, der wohl ebenfalls die Ruhe vor der Nacht irgendwo am Berg genoss.
Ohne Übertreibung und mit hundertprozentiger Sicherheit was das der BIGste Tag in meiner Kitekarriere. Diesen zu toppen wird wohl leider so schnell nicht möglich sein, aber man gibt ja immer sein bestes. Das GPS zeigte 112 gefahrene km, 10.335 Höhenmeter, Max Speed 81km/h, Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit 21km/h, Zeit in Fahrt 5:33h, Pausenzeit 3:12h (dazu gehört einpacken, auspacken, Bilder machen, Video, also letztlich die Zeit, die man sich nicht vom Fleck bewegt hat. Richtig Pause habe ich nur 20 min gemacht)

Fazit vom Trip: 6 Tage dort davon konnten wir jeden Tag kiten. Montag bis Mittwoch war das Wetter zwar schlecht und es hat viel geschneit, aber es gab mal für einige Minuten ein paar Fenster, wo man Sicht hatte. Wind war eigentlich nie das Problem, den hat‘s dort immer. Sonntag (erster Tag aufm Gipfel) sowie Freitag (noch einmal bis zum Gipfel) waren auch BIG DAYs aber der Donnerstag hat eben alles in den Schatten gestellt!
Muss man das: Ja man muss da unbedingt hin! Der Vulkan ist riesig und bietet so viel Spielraum, das habe ich sonst noch nie an einem Berg erlebt! Es sollte aber genug Schnee liegen, damit die scharfen Lavasteine gut verdeckt sind. Ansonsten viel Material mitbringen zum schrotten!
Am besten man fliegt nach Catania am Fuße des Ätna. Von dort ist es eine knappe Stunde mit dem Auto bis Nicolosi Skigebiet auf der Südseite. Ein weiteres Skigebiet befindet sich auf der Nordseite.

Just in time I arrived on Saturday for the www.chastadays.com while Chasta, Pascal and Kari had their session on the north side I got to the hotel on the south which was completely in the fog and it was already too late for the drive to the other side. But Sunday looked promising and it was!!! Again Chasta, Pascal, Kari and me took the first gondola up the ski resort at 9am. The kites were out half an hour later but it was super tricky to get out the bowl we were in and further upwind through the volcano rocks sharp as razors. The wind was blowing kind of north – west and came downhill from the top giving us a toxic breeze in the nose as we climbed. Thanks to the balaclavas we could use as a filter. This mountain was boiling that day as the smoke rises heavily… exciting and scary at the same time. But as most of the time the excitement overweight and we went on. Actually it was only Chasta and me left as Pascal and Kari were struggling to get out the bowl at the start with the gusty conditions.
The route wasn’t easy at all although the wind got more constant the further up we got and we took the perfect choice with our Mantas M3 12m that day. We had to make our way uphill and upwind through the rocks and craters. The little snow didn’t leave us much space sometimes but after about 2h we reached the north face of the main crater top. About 100m down the top we packed our kites in a safe place before we hiked up the rest of the volcano. Standing there at 3289m and looking into the smoking big hole is like the gate to hell on one side and watching down to the medeterain sea on the other like heaven. It was a real impressive feeling standing there so close to this active crater and we enjoyed it big time taking all the time we needed as there was no rush to leave as it was just 12am. With the kites in our rucksacks we rode back close to where we started meeting all the other guys that were riding down at 2600m near the ski resort. The wind dropped quite soon after Chasta and I left they told us giving them not enough power to climb further. We have been so lucky we went for it straight away as the wind died out completely that afternoon.

Custom Snowkite Guide days at Lukmanierpass 14.+15. Jan 10

Just back from a guiding weekend in the Alps. Lex and Patrick from Luxembourg booked me as their guide for 2 days and we were lucky to find perfect conditions at the Lukmanierpass. Lex never snowkited before but did some courses kitesurfing and is an excellent skier so he got the hang of it on the 8m Access XT in no time. Patrick has been on a Greenland crossing expedition where they were using kites but he never kited in the mountains so there was still plenty for him to learn. Actually Patrick edited a book so called “Ice Flow” of his Greenland trip which is very nicely written in French, German and English and with tons of great pictures. The conditions couldn’t be any better on Friday with strong 20knots northerly winds and blue sky with 10cm of fresh powder. Saturday wind changed direction to south and got weaker with around 10 knots. Anyway we all had a great time and loads of fun. Check out the pictures of the guys ripping.

Big Days before X-Mass

Hi everyone,

I have just returned back home for a family X-Mass after some epic days in the Swiss Alps. With Ronny and Patrick from www.unhooked.ch their Team- Lawyer and Schübi we climbed up with skins for about 1h. We wanted to score Piz Languard and started in Pontresina. As soon as we got over the tree line we felt a little breeze and we were able to use our biggest kites to climb further. It was a long valley about 5-7km long that we had to climb downwind but uphill. The wind was very light and tricky, there wasn’t much snow either which resulted in massive scratches in the skies. It was damn cold around -20°C and the wind dropped completely in the afternoon letting only Ronny enough to make it to a 3000m summit at the end of the valley. Props to him for that!

We all came back well from the mountain but tired as cause of the cold!

The next day didn’t look like it was going to be a big one. Northerly winds only in the morning then dropping down completely. Still super cold I made my way up to the Berninapass. The wind was still strong in the morning so I decided to climb the Lagalb mountain once again. Tacked down upwind to the bottom of the mountain from the pass first. My plan was to climb beside the gondola but I didn’t get any breeze down there. I walked back up near the road for a while and got into the wind again. Took out my 12m Manta M3 and started climbing but not from the north face but through the super rocky west side of the Lagalb. It was unreal… super steep and rock everywhere but I found a good line and ended up 50m below the summit 1h later. The people in the ski resort could belief what I was doing there! I packed the kite and rode down the west face as well. Had to get out my kite once again to go further up the road to reach the car and as soon as I got there the wind died out completely – Am I lucky or what?!

Another quick session was on Monday at Hochwang. The wind didn’t fully turned into south so it was kind of side on there and the visibility wasn’t perfect either so I just had a quick blast up there and 2 climbs to the top with a massive powder decent. There is so much powder it’s a great laugh anyway!

Pure Magic at Berninapass

Yehaaa back from the Alps where I meat Francoise and his bro Chris from Dublin. Francoise is owner of the local kite shop in Dublin www.puremagic.ie and is organizing kite camps beside the shop and school business. They came to meet me personally and to check out the location for a possible snowkitecamp in march.

They have been really stoked of what I showed them and lucky them, we even got two great session of snowkiting. Even though they haven’t snowboarded for long they were snowkiting straight away. They were using the Ozone Foilkites first time as well and really understood the advantage of having a foil on the snow although they are used to inflatable kites. The winds were pretty strong on Tuesday and Wednesday but still we went out riding and having a blast. Really looking forward having the whole bunch of Irish here for a camp.
